New Beginnings Community Garden is a small volunteer plot on Davidson Avenue in University Heights, and for the third August running it opens early for a gentle 90-minute flow among the raised beds. There is no studio, no sound system and no fee — just mats on the ground, late-summer blooms at eye level and neighbors breathing in time. If you have wanted to try yoga without committing to a class pack, this is the softest possible entry point.
What to expect
You come through a garden gate on Davidson Avenue, unroll your mat between the beds and settle in while the block is still quiet. The session runs gentle and unhurried for about an hour and a half, with modifications offered rather than assumed. Expect a small crowd of regulars, some conversation afterward, and a walk home before the day heats up.
Good to know
- The 4 train at Fordham Road or 183rd Street leaves you a few blocks from Davidson Avenue.
- Bring your own mat and water — the garden does not stock either.
- Wear layers you can peel off; the beds start cool and warm up fast.
- It is a working garden with uneven ground and gravel paths, so wheelchair access is limited.
- All levels are welcome, and complete beginners are the point rather than the exception.
