Alley Pond Park hides a full Urban Park Rangers adventure course, and on select Sundays the Rangers throw it open to the public at no cost, which almost nobody outside eastern Queens seems to know. Groups spend a supervised two hours on climbing elements, balance obstacles and team challenges under the tree canopy, with Rangers handling instruction and safety. If your kid is eight or older, it's the borough's best free burn-off.

What to expect

You sign in at the course during the registration window, then join a Ranger-led group for roughly two hours on the elements. Expect climbing, balancing and cooperative obstacle problems rather than a race, with the Rangers coaching technique and managing safety throughout. Space is limited and allocated first come, first served, so the earlier you turn up the better.

Good to know

  • Programs are for ages eight and older, and adults 18 and up need a valid photo ID.
  • No sandals, flip-flops or open-toed shoes are allowed on the course.
  • Space is limited and first come, first served, so arrive well ahead of the session.
  • Morning and afternoon sessions both run, which doubles your chances of a spot.
  • The course sits deep in Alley Pond Park; driving or the Q30 bus is the realistic approach.
  • It's completely free, run by the NYC Parks Urban Park Rangers.
