A city-run ropes course you can climb for nothing is not something most New Yorkers know exists, and this one sits in Alley Pond Park in eastern Queens with Urban Park Rangers running it. The public session lasts about two hours across cables, beams and low elements, open to anyone eight or older who turns up early enough to get a slot. If a good Sunday means being off the ground for free, this is it.
What to expect
You sign in at the course, get a harness and a safety briefing from the Rangers, and work through a sequence of elements in a small group. Space is capped and slots go in the order people arrive, so the line forms well before registration opens. Closed-toe shoes are enforced — sandals and flip-flops will get you turned away at the desk.
Good to know
- The course is inside Alley Pond Park in Douglaston; head for the Adventure Course itself rather than a general park entrance.
- Closed-toe shoes only — no sandals, flip-flops or open-toed shoes are permitted on the course.
- Ages eight and up, and anyone eighteen or over must show a valid photo ID.
- Space is limited and slots are first-come, first-served, so arrive at least half an hour before the session.
- Free, with on-site registration only — there is no advance booking.
- Wear clothes you can climb in and tie long hair back; harnesses go on over whatever you're wearing.
