The New York Chinese Scholar's Garden is one of only two authentic scholar's gardens in the country, built by Suzhou craftsmen from materials shipped from China, and almost no one in New York knows it is on Staten Island. This programme walks you through its courtyards, halls and rock gardens, then sits you down with brush and ink to make something from what you just looked at. It is the final session of the summer run, which makes this the last chance until next year.
What to expect
A guided walk through the garden's courtyards, koi pond, bamboo groves and Suzhou-built pavilions, framed around slow looking rather than architectural facts. That is followed by a hands-on ink wash painting session with materials provided. Around ninety minutes, in a genuinely quiet corner of the Snug Harbor campus.
