A mobile art studio parking itself on a park lawn is summer programming at its most charming — free materials, guided projects and no sign-up, in a neighborhood park whose hilltop happens to have one of the best skyline views in Brooklyn. It's an ideal low-effort afternoon for families in Sunset Park, and visitors get the bonus of a park (and taco corridor) most tourists never reach. Come for the crafts, stay for the sunset over the harbor.

What to expect

Tables and supplies arranged on the lawn with drop-in art activities running through the afternoon — expect painting, printmaking or craft projects geared to kids, with facilitators guiding each station. The park's playgrounds, pool and famous view deck are all within a few minutes' walk.

Good to know

  • Take the R to 45th Street; the lawn is at 44th Street and 6th Avenue
  • Free drop-in — no registration, materials provided
  • Best for kids but open to all ages
  • The park's crest has a sweeping view of the harbor, skyline and Statue of Liberty
  • Sunset Park's 5th Avenue food scene — tacos, banh mi, bakeries — is right downhill
