Ajna Dance Company teaches Bollywood and bhangra the way it should be taught outdoors: loud music, big arm lines, and steps broken into pieces you can actually hold onto. The hour happens on Liberty Lawn at Pier 6, so you are dancing with the harbor on one side and the Lower Manhattan skyline on the other. If you want one free thing this weekend that leaves you sweaty and grinning, this is it.
What to expect
Show up at Liberty Lawn, keep your shoes on or kick them off, and fall into rows facing the instructor. The class builds a short routine out of simple, repeatable moves — shoulder work, footwork, the big bhangra arms — and runs it with the music until the whole lawn is more or less together. No experience assumed, and nobody is watching but the joggers.
Good to know
- Pier 6 sits at the foot of Atlantic Avenue; take the 2, 3, 4 or 5 to Borough Hall or the F to Bergen Street and walk down.
- Pre-registration is required and lawn space is capped, so lock in a spot rather than turning up cold.
- Wear clothes you can move in; sneakers or bare feet both work on grass.
- Bring water — Liberty Lawn is fully exposed and August sun is unforgiving.
- No dance experience is needed; the choreography is built for beginners.
- Works for teens, adults and kids old enough to follow steps.
