Orchard Beach's pavilion is one of the great pieces of New Deal architecture in the city, a curved colonnade facing a mile of sand, freshly renovated and back in use as a stage. The series has run every Sunday all summer and this is the last one, so the crowd is at its most committed. If you want the actual end-of-summer Bronx experience rather than a curated version, go.
What to expect
A beach afternoon with a band attached. People set up chairs on the pavilion apron and the sand in front of it, dance in front of the stage, and rotate between the water and the music. Snack bars at the pavilion sell refreshments. The beach itself stays open, so you can swim while the band plays.
Good to know
- 6 train to Pelham Bay Park, then the Bx12 Select Bus Service to Orchard Beach; the bus is the only direct transit link.
- Free to attend, with refreshments for sale at the pavilion snack bars.
- Bring a beach chair or a towel; seating on the apron is whatever you carry in.
- This is the last Sunday of the series, so expect a fuller crowd than earlier in the summer.
- Lifeguards are on duty during beach season; check flags before swimming.
- Sunscreen and water, since there is very little shade outside the pavilion colonnade.
