The full Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra playing Bird's book outdoors in Harlem, in the neighborhood where Charlie Parker first made his name, for exactly nothing. Sherman Irby conducts, with trumpeter Marquis Hill and vocalist Ekep Nkwelle sitting in as guests, and Bill Saxton's Harlem All-Stars warm the crowd first. If you only make one free show all summer, this is the one to plant a blanket for.
What to expect
A sloping lawn amphitheater ringed by the schist outcrop of Mount Morris, filling steadily from late afternoon. Expect blankets, folding chairs, coolers and a crowd that spans Harlem regulars and jazz pilgrims. The horns cut clean across the park; sightlines from the upper rock are surprisingly good if the bowl fills.
Good to know
- Take the 2/3 or 4/5/6 to 125th Street; the park runs from 120th to 124th between Madison and Mount Morris Park West
- No ticket and no RSVP - just show up and find grass
- Bring a blanket or low folding chair; the amphitheater seating fills early
- Arrive well before the headliners if you want to sit inside the bowl rather than on the surrounding rock
- Family friendly and all ages; strollers manage the paths fine
- Food carts gather at the park edges, but bringing your own picnic is normal here

Do I need a ticket?
No. Every Charlie Parker Jazz Festival performance is free and unticketed - there is no RSVP, no wristband and no reserved seating. You walk into the park and sit wherever there is room.
What happens if it rains?
City Parks Foundation makes weather calls close to showtime and posts updates to cityparksfoundation.org and its social channels. Light rain usually does not stop the show; check before you leave home.
Can I bring food and drink?
Yes. Picnics, coolers and blankets are standard at Marcus Garvey Park for this festival. Glass and alcohol follow normal NYC Parks rules, so pack accordingly.
