Flatlands is the deep-Brooklyn grid of detached houses and driveways that outsiders never picture when they say Brooklyn, and its block parties are correspondingly relaxed — long, food-heavy, and running well past sunset. East 56th by Avenue L is a classic example: a wide residential street with room for tables down the middle and enough space for kids to actually run. If you want a low-key Brooklyn afternoon that costs nothing, this is a good street to find yourself on.

What to expect

Barricades close the block and the roadbed fills with folding tables, grills, coolers and speakers. Expect food coming off the grill continuously, kids on bikes and scooters, and neighbours in and out of their houses all afternoon. The party runs long, so the crowd shifts from families early to a later evening group.

Good to know

  • Flatlands is bus territory; the 2 and 5 to Flatbush Avenue plus a bus is the usual route
  • Free with no admission
  • Park several blocks away — the closed street takes all the nearby spots
  • A folding chair is worth bringing for a long afternoon
  • Family-friendly early, with a later evening crowd
  • Rain can cancel the whole thing
