Bergen Beach and Mill Basin sit on the far southeastern edge of Brooklyn, out where the streets end at the water and the houses have driveways and boats. Block parties out here are annual institutions run by the same families year after year, and the fact that this one has 'annual' in its name tells you it's been happening long enough to be expected. If you want an afternoon in the Brooklyn almost nobody visits, this stretch is worth the trip.
What to expect
The block is barricaded at both ends and given entirely to residents — tables, grills, coolers and speakers along the roadbed, kids riding up and down the closed asphalt. Expect a long day that builds through the afternoon and continues after dark. A folding chair and something to contribute are both good ideas.
