Athens Square is Astoria's most distinctive small park - a plaza with three Doric columns, a bronze Socrates and an amphitheatre-style stage, built by the neighbourhood's Greek community and used all summer for free outdoor performance. Seeing a set there means sitting under the columns in the middle of a residential Queens block. It is free, it is genuinely charming and it is a two-minute walk from some of the best food in the borough.
