Before there was string there was cordage, and this workshop at the Randall's Island Urban Farm has you making it from plants growing in the park. Two hours of twisting fiber by hand, plus the history of why this one skill quietly underwrote nets, shelters and almost everything else humans built. If you like crafts that end in a functional object rather than a decoration, register early — these sessions fill.
What to expect
You meet at the Urban Farm, get shown which park plants yield usable fiber, then spend most of the session learning the twist that turns loose material into cord that actually holds under tension. Instructors circulate to fix technique, and there is farm context on the plants themselves. Expect to leave with something you made and slightly sore fingers.

- Registration is required and spots are limited — sign up through the NYC Parks listing rather than turning up.
- M35 bus from 125th Street, or walk over the Wards Island Bridge from East 103rd Street.
- The farm is outdoors, so sun protection and water are worth bringing.
