Morrisania is where a huge amount of the Bronx's musical history was made, and its block parties carry that DNA directly — the block party is, after all, the format hip-hop was born in, a few miles north of here in the early 1970s. Forest Avenue by Home Street is an ordinary residential block doing the same thing generations have done: close the street, plug in the sound, cook for everybody. If you want the most historically loaded free event format in New York, this is it.
What to expect
The block is barricaded and taken over by residents — tables, grills, coolers, speakers and kids with the run of the asphalt. Expect food shared freely, music running the length of the block, and a crowd that grows through the afternoon into the evening. Come as a guest of the neighborhood rather than an audience.
