Ginger Root at Mercury Lounge

Cameron Lew's city-pop project plays the small back room at Mercury Lounge, a fraction of the size of the rooms he usually headlines.

Ginger Root's records live somewhere between Yellow Magic Orchestra and a late-night infomercial, and the live show leans hard into that bit — matching outfits, VHS-grade visuals and songs tight enough to survive the joke. Mercury Lounge's back room is small enough that there is no bad spot in it, which is the kind of proximity this project rarely offers anymore. If you like your indie pop funny, funky and short on distance between band and crowd, book this before it goes.

What to expect

A narrow standing room behind the front bar with a low stage and no seating to speak of, which puts the whole audience within a few rows of the band. Sets run tight and the between-song patter leans into the project's variety-show conceit. The front bar stays open for anyone who wants a breather.

Good to know

  • Take the F to Second Avenue or the J or Z to Essex Street; Mercury Lounge sits on East Houston.
  • The room is standing only and small, so being near the front means arriving with doors rather than at showtime.
  • There is a separate front bar you can retreat to without losing your re-entry.
  • Bring ID — the venue cards at the door regardless of ticket type.
  • The back room is at street level, which makes it one of the easier small LES rooms for step-free access.
  • Good for a first date if you both like the music; the room is too loud for getting-to-know-you conversation.
