Hancock Street between Tompkins and Marcy is one of the great brownstone blocks in Bedford-Stuyvesant, wide, tree-lined and almost entirely intact. Its fourth annual block party closes the road for most of a day, which is long enough for the format to do everything it does: grills, tables, music, kids on bikes, neighbours who only see each other in August. Free, on the street, and one of dozens across Brooklyn that same day.
What to expect
Expect barricades at both ends, folding tables and grills along the kerb, a sound system at one end and children with the roadway to themselves. Bed-Stuy's tree canopy means this is one of the shadier block parties you will find. Passers-by are generally welcome; it is a public street.
