Socrates Sculpture Park is a former landfill turned free, five-acre outdoor gallery on the Astoria waterfront, and Homecoming hands it to Sanford Biggers — one of the most celebrated artists working today, whose monumental sculptures splice quilt patterns, mythology and Black history. You can wander among the works with the East River and Manhattan skyline behind them, no ticket required. It's an easy, breezy art outing that doubles as one of Queens' best sunset spots.

What to expect

Expect an open, grassy park along the river where large sculptures sit out in the landscape, free to approach and photograph from every angle. The setting is casual and uncrowded, with benches, waterfront paths and skyline views. It pairs naturally with a walk to the neighboring Noguchi Museum.

Good to know

  • Take the N or W to Broadway in Astoria, then walk toward the river
  • The park is free and open daily; no ticket needed
  • Late afternoon into sunset is the best light over the water
  • Little shade on the lawn — bring water and a hat in summer
  • Combine it with the nearby Noguchi Museum for a full art afternoon
  • Wear comfortable shoes for the grass and gravel paths
