Igbo Day is the Nigerian diaspora's annual full-dress gathering, and southeast Queens — with one of the largest Nigerian communities in the country — puts it on properly at Roy Wilkins Park. Expect masquerade traditions, drumming, dancers in isiagu and george wrapper, speeches from cultural unions and a food line that is worth the trip on its own. If your idea of a good festival is one where the community is celebrating for itself rather than for visitors, this is that.

What to expect

The performance space anchors the day with staged cultural presentations, while the surrounding parkland fills with food vendors, community organization tables and families. Traditional dress is everywhere and photography is generally welcome. It runs across the afternoon into the evening with the crowd building steadily.
