Brooklyn Kura was among the first American sake breweries taken seriously by Japanese brewers, and this class is the fastest way to understand why — a Sake 101 walk-through of rice, polishing and yeast, then five pours including four house sakes and one premium bottle from Japan. Some come fresh from the press, which you cannot get from a shelf bottle. If you nod along at sake lists without knowing what junmai means, start here.
What to expect
The session opens with a presentation covering the basics and hands out material you can take home, then moves into a guided tasting of five sakes with food pairings. A guided tour of the brewery floor shows the actual tanks and press behind the taproom. It runs about ninety minutes and ends with you in a room that also happens to be a very good bar.
