South Jamaica's block associations have been the backbone of the neighborhood for generations, and Inwood Street's is doing what they all do best: closing the street, firing up the grills and putting the whole block outside for an afternoon. There is no program and no stage — the point is the neighbors. If you want the least commercial version of a New York summer weekend, this is what it looks like.
What to expect
Expect a residential street closed to cars, with folding tables, grills and portable speakers set up by the block association, and kids taking over the roadway. Everything is neighbor-run and free. Bring a chair if you plan to stay for more than a pass-through.
