It's My Park is the NYC Parks program that hands neighborhood green space back to the people who actually use it, and Brust Park has its own volunteer stewards doing exactly that. Expect gloves, bags and grabbers, a couple of hours of litter picking and bed tidying, and the specific satisfaction of a park that looks better when you leave than when you arrived. If you want a Sunday that is useful rather than photogenic, take this one.
What to expect
Show up at the park and find the volunteer table, where someone from Stewards of Brust Park signs you in and points you at a task. Most of it is litter collection, weeding and clearing around benches and planting beds, done in small groups at a relaxed pace. Bring water — it is outdoor work under an August sun.
Good to know
- The 1 train to 242nd Street–Van Cortlandt Park is the nearest subway; Brust Park is a short walk from there.
- Gloves, bags and tools are generally supplied, but your own work gloves never hurt.
- Wear closed shoes and clothes you do not mind staining.
- Bring a water bottle and sunscreen — shade is limited while you are working.
- Good for teens who need service hours and for families with older kids.

Common questions
Do I need to register?
Walk-ups are usually welcome at It's My Park events, but the nycgovparks.org listing carries the organizer's contact if you want to confirm a spot, especially for a group.
Is it free?
Yes. It's My Park volunteer days are free and run by NYC Parks with local stewardship groups.
Can kids help?
Yes, with an adult. Litter pickup suits older children; younger kids should stay with a parent and skip the tools.
