The Vanguard is a 130-seat triangular cellar with a low ceiling and famously forgiving acoustics, and it is still the room where the jazz canon gets written. This quartet is a genuine draw: Lovano's broad, searching tenor next to Julian Lage, the most in-demand improviser of his generation, over Will Calhoun's polyrhythmic drumming. If you have only one Vanguard night in you, spend it on a band this good.

What to expect

You descend a narrow staircase from Seventh Avenue into a red-walled wedge of a room where the back wall is barely 40 feet from the stage. The quartet plays two sets an evening, drawing on Lovano's originals and open-ended standards, with long improvised passages. Seating is first-come within your ticket, so early arrivals get the front tables.

Good to know

  • Take the 1, 2 or 3 to 14th Street or the A, C, E to 14th Street; the club is at Seventh Avenue South and 11th
  • Doors open shortly before each set and seating is first-come, so queue on the sidewalk if you want a front table
  • There is a one-drink minimum per person and the club is cash-and-card at the table
  • No talking during sets — the Vanguard enforces this and the room is small enough that it matters
  • The staircase is steep and there is no elevator, which makes step-free access difficult
  • Photography during the music is discouraged; save it for the stairwell portraits on the way out

Common questions

How early should I arrive at the Village Vanguard?

Queue about 30–40 minutes before your set if you want a front table. Seating inside is first-come regardless of when you bought your ticket.

Can I stay for both sets?

No. The room clears between sets, and a second set requires a separate ticket.

Is the Vanguard wheelchair accessible?

The club is down a steep flight of stairs with no elevator, so it is not step-free. Contact the venue directly to discuss options before booking.
