A brass band closes out a free triple bill on Culture Lab's outdoor Malt Drive Stage, with a pop-up market running alongside it.

Culture Lab LIC programs free live music in an open industrial lot every summer weekend, and this Sunday builds from a pop-up market through The Loyales into a full brass band that will not stay on the stage for long. It is the kind of neighborhood arts space that Long Island City still has and Manhattan mostly does not - loose, outdoor, run on a shoestring and genuinely free. RSVP, bring a folding chair, and plan to stay for the horns.

What to expect

An outdoor lot with a stage at one end, casual seating and space to stand, plus food and drink on site. Sets run across the afternoon and into the evening with the biggest act last. Expect a mixed local crowd, families early and a more adult mix by the closing set.

Good to know

  • The 7 to Vernon Blvd-Jackson Avenue or the E, M and G at Court Square are both close
  • RSVP in advance even though it is free - capacity is managed
  • Enter through the parking lot rather than looking for a street door
  • Bring a folding chair; seating is limited and casual
  • Gantry Plaza State Park is a short walk if you want skyline views before or after
  • The lot is open-air, so check the forecast before committing
