Noguchi built this museum himself out of a Long Island City industrial building, and this show puts his half-century of New York work back in the rooms it came from. Admission is free on the first Friday of every month, and in summer those Fridays run late with the sculpture garden open into the evening. If you want the calmest beautiful hour in the city, go then and sit in the garden.
What to expect
Stone, metal and paper works across two floors of a raw-walled former factory, opening onto an outdoor sculpture garden with basalt, bamboo and a fountain. The building itself does half the work; people slow down noticeably once they reach the garden. Allow ninety minutes including the garden and the Akari shop.
Good to know
- Take the N or W to Broadway in Astoria and walk about fifteen minutes toward Vernon Boulevard
- Admission is free once a month; check the museum's website for the free evening
- The sculpture garden is included and is the reason to leave time at the end
- The museum is closed some weekdays, so check the schedule before travelling
- Excellent for design and architecture people; very calm for a solo visit
