NYRR Open Run turns a neighborhood park into a free 5K every week, and St. Mary's is one of the better courses for it: rolling hills, grand old trees and a stretch of the South Bronx that was once part of Jonas Bronck's estate. It is volunteer-led and genuinely open — walkers, strollers, first-timers and fast regulars all set off together from East 149th Street and Eagle Avenue. If you want a running habit without a race entry, start here.

What to expect

Gather near the East 149th Street and Eagle Avenue entrance, where volunteers handle a short briefing and send everyone off together. The course takes in the park's hills, so expect honest climbs rather than a flat time trial, and expect to pass people and be passed. Runners hang around afterward far more than they would at a timed race.

Good to know

  • The 6 at East 143rd Street–St. Mary's Street and the 2 and 5 at Third Avenue–149th Street are both a short walk.
  • Sign up once through the NYRR Open Run page linked from the NYC Parks listing.
  • It is walk-friendly, so pace anxiety is misplaced — plenty of people finish on foot.
  • The course rolls; flat-course legs will notice the hills, but no special shoes are needed.
  • The park has a pool, playground and courts, so it works as a family staging ground while one adult runs.

Common questions

Is NYRR Open Run free?

Yes. Every Open Run is free and open to runners and walkers of all ages, abilities and experience levels.

Do I have to run the whole 5K?

No. Walking it is normal and encouraged, and there is no cutoff or timing pressure.

Do I need to sign up in advance?

NYC Parks links to an NYRR sign-up page. Registering ahead is the smoothest route, so check that page for the current requirement.
