Brevoort Playground has an actual performance area built into it — a rarity for a NYCHA-adjacent playground — and an old-school set there is the sound of the blocks around it: classic hip-hop, disco and soul on real speakers, with the basketball courts still running behind you. It is a residents' event, small and unpolished and completely free. If you want an afternoon that no listings site is going to cover, this is one.

What to expect

Expect a DJ and speakers set up in the playground's paved performance space, with benches, courts and play equipment in use around it. The crowd comes from the immediate blocks and skews multigenerational, with kids cycling between the music and the playground. Bring a chair — fixed seating is limited to park benches.

Good to know

  • Brevoort Playground is off Ralph Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, beside the Brevoort Houses.
  • The A and C at Ralph Avenue is the closest subway stop.
  • The performance area and paths are paved and flat.
  • Bench seating is limited, so a folding chair pays off for a long afternoon.
  • It is free and open to the neighborhood under a NYC Parks permit.
  • Basketball courts and playground equipment are on site for kids.
