This is the other free Shakespeare in the park — Harlem's own, staged in a real amphitheater with no lottery, no line-at-dawn, just show up. Carl Cofield directs a cast led by James Udom and Nick Westrate, and CTH's productions consistently draw critics downtown for their bold, contemporary staging. If you missed the Delacorte's lottery scramble this summer, this is the free open-air Shakespeare that actually lets you in.
What to expect
An open-air amphitheater performance that starts at dusk, with a pop-up night market and community tables running before curtain on most evenings. Seating is unreserved amphitheater rows — locals bring cushions. The show runs about two hours under the trees with the drummers of Marcus Garvey Park sometimes audible behind it.
Good to know
- Take the 2/3 to 125th St or the 4/5/6 to 125th St — the amphitheater is inside Marcus Garvey Park at Mount Morris Park West
- No tickets or lottery — seating is first-come, so arrive early for center rows
- A pop-up market with Harlem vendors runs before most performances
- Performances run Tuesday through Sunday; Mondays are dark
- Bring a cushion for the stone amphitheater seating and bug spray for midsummer
- Fully outdoors — performances are weather-dependent
