The whole point of Green and Go is that it doesn't ask for your whole day — you show up at the lawn, take a grabber and a bag, work the grass for a couple of hours and leave with the visible satisfaction of a clean field behind you. Prospect Park's east side lawns take heavy weekend use, so the difference you make is immediate rather than abstract. If volunteering has always sounded like a bigger commitment than you can make, this is the version that fits.
What to expect
Meet the crew on the Vanderbilt Lawn, sign in and take gloves, a grabber and a bag. You work the lawn and its path edges at your own pace, clearing litter and tidying up after heavy park use, with staff on hand to point you at the areas that need it. Expect flat open ground, sun exposure and easy, sociable work.
Good to know
- B, Q or S to Prospect Park, or the F or G to 15th St-Prospect Park, both work for the east side
- Gloves, grabbers and bags are all provided
- Flat, level lawn — one of the more accessible volunteer sites in the park
- Bring water, sunscreen and a hat; there's very little shade on the lawn
- No sign-up needed in advance, but do check in with the crew when you arrive
- Closed-toe shoes are the sensible choice for litter work

Common questions
How long do I need to stay?
It's built to be short and flexible — the format is designed for people who can only give a couple of hours.
Do I need to sign up in advance?
No. It's drop-in; just check in with the crew on the lawn when you arrive.
Is it suitable for kids?
Yes, with an adult. Litter pickup with a grabber is one of the easiest volunteer tasks for children to join.
