Tompkinsville Park is the North Shore's front yard — a triangle of green at Bay Street and Victory Boulevard that neighborhood groups have spent years programming back into life. Play In The Park is the plainest version of that work: free games, activities and open play set out on the grass for whoever shows up, no registration, no fee. If you are on Staten Island with kids and a free afternoon, this is the easiest good thing within walking distance of the ferry.

What to expect

Expect a loosely run afternoon of lawn games, arts activities and open play staffed by community volunteers, with families cycling through as the hours pass. Everything happens outdoors on the park's open space, weather permitting. Kids bring themselves; the equipment is provided.

Good to know

  • Take the Staten Island Ferry to St. George, then walk about ten minutes south along Bay Street
  • Free and drop-in; no registration required
  • Weather permitting — programs move or cancel in heavy rain
  • Best for younger kids and families looking for a low-key afternoon
  • Bay Street has coffee and food spots a block away
  • Shade is limited on the lawn, so bring hats and water
