Chelsea is almost entirely dark this weekend, with Zwirner, Pace, Paula Cooper, Petzel and Sean Kelly all opening the following week, which makes Tribeca the only functioning gallery district in the city. Kreps has a summer group show running across both Cortlandt Alley and Broadway, and walking into a gallery costs nothing. If you want a real gallery afternoon rather than a museum one, go on the Friday.
What to expect
Two nearby Tribeca storefront spaces a short walk apart, hung as a single summer group exhibition rather than two separate presentations. Gallery staff will let you look without any sales pressure; you sign nothing and pay nothing at the door. Allow twenty minutes per space, or longer if you ask the front desk for the checklist of artists and materials.
