Skate video nights are their own genre - part screening, part reunion, part excuse to sit on a lawn with several hundred people who all know the same parts by heart. McCarren Park's south lawn is the natural home for it in north Brooklyn, a few blocks from the skatepark and surrounded by the neighbourhood that made the audience. Free, outdoors and considerably more social than a cinema.

What to expect

Expect a projector and portable sound aimed at the lawn, people sprawled on grass and boards, and a crowd that talks through the parts they already know. The screening starts once it is dark, so the earlier hours are hanging out. McCarren has a track, ballfields, a pool and a skatepark within the same park.

Good to know

  • McCarren Park straddles Greenpoint and Williamsburg; the L to Bedford Avenue and the G to Nassau Avenue are both a short walk.
  • Free and open to the public — it is a permitted public event, so no ticket or RSVP is involved.
  • Bring a blanket — the south lawn is grass with no fixed seating.
  • Come before dark; the screening starts only once the light goes.
  • Bug spray helps on a Brooklyn lawn in August.
  • The skatepark, track and pool are all inside the same park.
