Summer on the Hudson: Harlem Moves with Limón Dance Company

Dancers from the 80-year-old Limón company teach their signature technique on a Hudson pier, live musicians playing beside them, free to join.

The Limón Dance Company has been a pillar of American modern dance since 1946, and its technique — weight, fall, rebound, breath — is unusually satisfying to learn in a body rather than watch from a seat. Doing it on the West Harlem Piers with live musicians and the Hudson going gold behind you is the kind of free programming that justifies the whole Parks summer budget. If you've never taken a dance class in your life, this is the least intimidating possible entry point.

What to expect

Company dancers lead the group through warm-up and phrases out on the open pier deck, with live accompaniment rather than a speaker. No experience is assumed and people join and drop out as they pass. Afterwards the pier stays busy with the rest of the evening's Summer on the Hudson programming.

Good to know

  • Take the 1 to 125th Street and walk west to the waterfront at Marginal Street.
  • Wear clothes you can move in and shoes you don't mind on a pier deck.
  • No experience or partner is required — it's an open, all-levels class.
  • The pier is fully exposed, so sun protection early and a layer later both help.
  • Other Summer on the Hudson programming runs on the same pier, so it's worth staying on.
