MIKE's Young World has become the flagship event of New York's underground rap renaissance, and this free SummerStage edition adds a true headline: Max B, the Harlem cult icon whose 'wavy' influence runs through a generation of rap, performing in a city park. Backed by the Band of the Century, it bridges the scene's DIY present and its mythologized past. For rap fans it's the weekend's most historically loaded free ticket — no ticket required at all.
What to expect
A packed park lawn of heads, locals and scene kids, with sets running through the afternoon into early evening. Expect live-band renditions, surprise guests — Young World has a reputation for them — and a euphoric reception when Max B takes the stage. Food vendors and the neighborhood surround the park when you need a break.
