Longevity stick is a gentle Chinese form built around a wooden staff — slow weight shifts, joint rotations and balance work that suits every age and asks nothing of your knees — and the Friends of WNYC Transmitter Park run it free at the East River's edge. Forty-five minutes at 8:30 on a Sunday, with the Manhattan skyline straight across the water and Greenpoint still asleep behind you. If tai chi has always appealed but you never found a class, this is the low-commitment door in.

What to expect

The group meets on the park lawn and works through a guided sequence for about forty-five minutes, at a pace that suits complete beginners and older participants. Sticks are typically shared or loaned; wear something you can move in. The park's pier and waterfront lawn are open afterward.

Good to know

  • Take the G to Greenpoint Avenue and walk about ten minutes west to the water.
  • The class runs 8:30 to 9:15am on Sundays, and again on Thursday mornings.
  • It is free and drop-in; no registration or membership is needed.
  • The form is low-impact and suits all ages and fitness levels, including complete beginners.
  • The Friends group also runs Sunday gardening at 10am and free summer film nights in the same park.
  • It is outdoors on grass, so it is weather-dependent.
