Faber Park sits on Richmond Terrace with the Kill Van Kull right behind it, which makes an outdoor underwater painting class more fitting than it sounds. Julia Correale runs it as a genuine step-by-step — how to draw a fish that reads as a fish, how to layer washes so water gains depth, how to fill a page — and every brush and sheet is handed to you. If you have meant to start painting, this asks for two hours and nothing else.

What to expect

The session runs outdoors at the recreation center, so supplies are set out and you sit down and start. Correale demonstrates each stage — the drawing, the color mixing, the layering — and works around the group. Absolute beginners and people who already paint end up at the same tables, and nobody checks your skill level at the door.

Good to know

  • Faber Park Recreation Center is on Richmond Terrace in Port Richmond, on the S40 bus route out of the St. George ferry terminal
  • No registration is required, and all paint, brushes and paper are provided
  • It runs outdoors, so bring sun protection and expect the session to be weather-dependent
  • Wear something you would not mind getting paint on — watercolor is forgiving but not invisible
  • Open to all skill levels, which in practice means children and adult beginners at the same tables
  • The park has a pool and playgrounds for family who will not sit through a painting class

Common questions

Do I need to bring supplies?

No. NYC Parks provides paint, brushes and paper for this workshop. Bring water and sun protection for yourself.

Is it for children or adults?

Both. It is billed for all skill levels and taught as a guided step-by-step, so children and adult beginners work side by side.

Do I have to sign up?

No. The NYC Parks listing says registration is not required — turn up at Faber Park Recreation Center and join in.
