Yoga at Socrates with Astoria Yoga

Astoria Yoga leads a free outdoor class on Socrates Sculpture Park's lawn, with the East River and monumental sculpture on either side.

FreeFitnessOutdoors

Socrates Sculpture Park runs its entire public program for free, and a Sunday morning yoga class on the lawn is the version of that most worth setting an alarm for: East River on one side, monumental sculpture on the other and the Manhattan skyline straight ahead. Astoria Yoga leads it, so it is a real neighborhood studio rather than a corporate activation. Bring a mat, arrive a few minutes early to pick your patch of grass, and stay to walk the sculpture afterwards.

What to expect

An all-levels class on open grass with the instructor at the front and the waterfront behind. Expect uneven ground, ambient river and city sound, and a drop-in crowd of neighbourhood regulars. There is no equipment provided.

Good to know

  • The N and W to Broadway in Astoria then a walk toward the river
  • Bring your own mat and a towel - nothing is provided
  • Arrive a few minutes early to claim level ground
  • Sun on the open lawn is direct; a hat and water help
  • Stay after to walk the park's sculpture installations, which are also free
  • Classes are weather dependent, so check the park's channels
