Summer for the City's outdoor dance nights are some of the most joyful free events in Manhattan, and AfriCarnaval is one of the season's liveliest editions — African and Afro-Caribbean rhythms, carnival pageantry and a crowd that actually dances. It's on The Dance Floor, the fountain-adjacent plaza stage under a ten-foot disco ball, with the Met Opera house glowing behind you. If you want one free, photogenic, zero-commitment Saturday-night plan, start here at 6pm.
What to expect
An open-air plaza party: live performance and DJ sets, dancers in carnival dress, and hundreds of people dancing between the fountain and the opera house steps. No tickets needed — walk up, join in or watch from the plaza edges. Food and drink vendors operate around the campus.
