The Battle of Brooklyn was fought on August 27, 1776, the first and largest battle of the Revolutionary War after independence was declared. This ranger hike carries that thread out of Fort Greene Park and into Brooklyn Heights, connecting the British occupation that followed to the Navy Yard and the bridge that came a century later. If you want the 250th told on foot rather than in a display case, start here.

What to expect

Meet at the Fort Greene Park Visitor Center and set off with a ranger at a walking-tour pace through Fort Greene toward Brooklyn Heights. Expect stops on sidewalks and park corners where the ranger ties what you are looking at back to 1776 and forward through the century that followed. It covers real ground, so it is a walk, not a lecture.

Good to know

  • The C to Lafayette Avenue or the G to Fulton Street both leave you a few blocks from Fort Greene Park.
  • It covers real distance on city streets and park paths — wear shoes made for walking.
  • Bring water; shade gets patchy once the route leaves the park.
  • Part 1 ran earlier in the series, but this hike stands on its own with no prior session needed.
  • Best for adults and older kids who can handle a sustained walk of roughly ninety minutes.
