Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest has enough weekend energy to earn a spot on the board.

Fifty-six years in, this is the Oktoberfest the region's others are measured against, and the setting does half the work: pine forest, mountain air and a hall built for it. The organiser flies bands over from Franconia and Nuremberg, so the music is not a local covers act. The October 9–11 weekend gets the Frankenrebellen Express, an eight-piece that mixes traditional German, modern German and American Top 40, and Sunday is the family day if you are bringing children.

What to expect

A convention hall arranged with long tables and a stage, German beer and food service, contests run through the day including log sawing and steinholding, and children's games on Sundays.
