Learning to ride a bike as an adult in New York is a genuinely hard problem, and the city's free bike safety classes are the answer almost nobody knows about: helmets and often bikes supplied, a closed area to practise in, and instructors who teach the traffic rules alongside the balancing. East River Playground gives you flat, protected ground a block from the East River greenway. Free, and it fixes something most people never get around to.
What to expect
Expect instructors working with small groups on a paved area, drills covering starting, stopping, signalling and scanning, and a mix of complete beginners and people brushing up. Helmets are typically provided, and some classes provide bikes. Wear closed shoes and clothes you can move in.
