St. Mary's is the South Bronx's biggest park, a rolling green wedge in Mott Haven with paved paths and play areas that give new riders somewhere to practise that isn't a street with a truck route on it. Learning to ride safely matters more in this part of the city than almost anywhere, and a free class is the lowest-barrier way to get there. If you've got a bike and no confidence, or a kid ready to lose the training wheels, this is the session.
What to expect
Meet the instructors at the east playground area and start on flat paved ground well away from traffic. Expect drills on starting, stopping, balance and looking behind you, plus a helmet fitting and a walk-through of how to read a street safely. Instructors work individually with riders who need more time, and nobody is rushed.
Good to know
- 6 to Cypress Avenue, or the 2 and 5 to Jackson Avenue, both leave short walks
- Confirm in advance whether bikes and helmets are supplied for the session you're attending
- Wear closed-toe shoes and avoid loose trouser legs
- Practice takes place on flat paved surfaces inside the park
- Bring water — the paved areas get hot and shade is patchy
- Children should have a caregiver with them
