Opening weekend is the one time a long exhibition is genuinely new, and The Cheech is the only museum in the country built specifically around Chicano art. Lomas Garza's paintings are small and dense with incident — a cakewalk, a curandera, a backyard — and reward standing close to them, which is easier before a show settles into its crowds.
