Dead Road is one of Central Park's great accidental public rooms — a wide paved stretch below Sheep Meadow that skaters, soccer players and dancers have shared for generations without anyone officially planning it. A youth sports program running here inherits that setting: hard surface, open sky, the Sheep Meadow crowd fifty yards north. If you're crossing the park's south end anyway, this is a good spot to stop and see the space doing what it does best.
What to expect
Coached sessions on the paved road surface — drills, small-sided games and rotations for kids in age groups — with the usual Central Park traffic of cyclists, runners and skaters moving around them. Sheep Meadow, Heckscher Ballfields and the Mall are all within a few minutes' walk. The road stays public throughout.

- Enter at Columbus Circle (A, B, C, D or 1) or Fifth Avenue-59th St (N, Q, R or W) and walk in toward Sheep Meadow
- This is an organized program, so participation runs through its own signup rather than drop-in
- Dead Road is paved and flat — easy for strollers and wheelchairs, hard on knees for sport
- Very little shade on the road itself; the Mall's elm canopy is the nearest cover
- Water fountains are near Sheep Meadow and the Mall; restrooms are by Heckscher Playground
