Soca is carnival music built for movement, and this free class turns a picnic lawn on Randall's Island into a cardio party with the East River in the background. The instructor breaks the steps down for whoever turns up, so no prior dance experience is assumed and nobody is auditing your form. If you want a workout that does not feel like a workout, this is the least joyless thing on the island's schedule.
What to expect
Find the East River Picnic Area and join the group on the grass. The instructor teaches short combinations and then runs them at speed over a loud soca playlist, so it moves from learning to sweating fast. Expect a mixed-age crowd, a forgiving attitude toward people who arrive late or bail early, and very little shade.
Good to know
- The M35 bus from 125th Street and Lexington Avenue drops you on the island; the Wards Island Bridge from East 103rd Street is the walking route.
- Bring water and a towel — the lawn is exposed and the class is genuinely cardio.
- Sneakers work better than bare feet on grass here.
- Accessibility requests go to publicprograms@randallsisland.org.
- Free and drop-in, with no registration and no partner needed.
