There is something absurd and wonderful about a full big band crammed into the Blue Note's low-ceilinged basement — you are close enough to see the trumpet section breathe, and the volume is physical in a way no concert hall reproduces. The All-Star Big Band keeps Gillespie's Afro-Cuban book alive, which means 'Manteca' and 'A Night in Tunisia' played by people who learned them from the source. If you want one night that explains why the Village became jazz's home address, take the 10:30 set.
What to expect
Two seatings a night with table service and a bar area behind. Seats are assigned by arrival order within your ticket type, so early arrival matters more than it looks. The room is small enough that there is no bad sightline, and the horn section is loud at every table.
