Waterfront yoga is one of the easiest wins in a New York summer, and this one is free, all-levels and scored by a live DJ rather than a phone speaker. Apryl Lopez leads the flow on the Heineken Riverdeck at Pier 17 while Alex Peugnet — a yoga instructor himself — handles the music, so the class moves with the set rather than fighting it. If you want an early start to a Seaport morning that ends with coffee by the water, this is the one to put in the calendar.
What to expect
You roll out your mat on an open-air deck facing the East River, with the Brooklyn Bridge in the frame for most of the practice. The class is pitched at all levels, so beginners are not stranded and regulars can take the fuller shapes. It runs about forty-five minutes, which leaves the rest of the morning for the Seaport's markets and cafes.
Good to know
- Take the 2/3, 4/5, A/C, J/Z or R to Fulton St and walk east toward Pier 17.
- Bring your own mat — the organizers ask participants to supply their own.
- The Riverdeck is open-air; a light layer helps before the sun gets over the buildings.
- Come a little early to claim space near the rail if you want the bridge in your sightline.
- Free to attend, all levels welcome, no prior experience required.
- Pier 17 has elevators and step-free access to the deck.
