Kurt Rosenwinkel's Next Step band is the group that taught a generation of guitarists what modern jazz could sound like, and he is bringing it back for six sets on Restaurant Row. Jazzcultural is barely six months old, a Barry Harris tribute room opened by the people behind Smalls and Mezzrow in the former Swing 46 space. If you want the most consequential guitarist in jazz in the newest listening room in town, this is the booking.
What to expect
The room is a small Midtown club with a cafe feel and a low stage, seating a fraction of what a concert hall holds. Two sets a night means you can pick early or late; the second usually stretches out. There is a jam session in the cafe on either side of the headline sets.
