East 107th Street runs off Fifth Avenue directly opposite the north end of Central Park, which makes it one of the better-placed blocks in East Harlem to close for an afternoon. A tenants association party there is resident-organised from start to finish: grills, tables, a sound system and the street handed back to the people who live on it. Free, and the park is right across the avenue.
What to expect
Expect barricades at both ends, food and tables along the kerb, music and children using the roadway. Central Park's northeast corner, the Conservatory Garden and the Harlem Meer are all a short walk west. It is a public street, so walking through is fine.
