Mezzrow is a basement built around a grand piano and about forty chairs, which makes it the most exposed room in the city for a pianist. Marc Copland plays with a touch and a harmonic language that reward exactly that closeness, and he has two early sets across two nights. If you want jazz that asks you to lean in rather than shout over, book the 6pm.
What to expect
You go down a staircase into a narrow room with the grand piano at one end and seating packed close around it. Sets are short and focused with a break between them, and the audience stays genuinely quiet throughout. Drinks come from a small bar at the back, and the room rarely holds more than forty people.
