The Orchard Beach lagoon is a genuine salt-marsh estuary sitting inside the city limits, and the Urban Park Rangers will put you on it in a canoe. You paddle out from the launch behind the Orchard Beach lot into Bartow Creek, close enough to the reeds to pick out wading birds without a scope, with a ranger naming what you are looking at. If you have only ever seen the Bronx from a road, this flips the whole orientation.
What to expect
Check in at the canoe and kayak launch at the northwest corner of the Orchard Beach parking lot, where rangers hand out life jackets and run a short paddling briefing before anyone gets wet. Boats go out as a loose group and stay together, with the rangers naming birds and explaining how the lagoon and creek feed into the Sound. No paddling experience is assumed.
Good to know
- Places are assigned by lottery through NYC Parks, so entering the draw is the only way in.
- Ages eight and up — younger children cannot be accommodated in the boats.
- Rangers supply boats, paddles and life jackets; you supply shoes that can get wet and clothes you don't mind splashing.
- The 6 train ends at Pelham Bay Park and a bus runs on toward Orchard Beach, but driving is the simpler approach to this corner of the park.
- Binoculars are worth carrying if you own a pair — the birding is the point, not just the paddle.
- There is no shade on the water, so a hat, sunscreen and water bottle earn their space.
