Pershing Square Plaza sits in one of the most architecturally loaded spots in Manhattan — under the Park Avenue viaduct, with Grand Central's facade on one side and the MetLife tower above — and the Summer Sounds series fills it with free lunchtime music. It is short, it is free, and it is right on top of the busiest transit hub in the country. If you work in Midtown, this is the most efficient possible lunch break upgrade.

What to expect

Expect a compact plaza setup with a stage, cafe tables and chairs, and an audience of office workers, commuters and passers-by who stop mid-errand. The set runs across the lunch hours rather than an evening block. Grand Central's dining concourse is thirty seconds away if you want to grab food and come back.

Good to know

  • Take the 4/5/6, 7 or S to Grand Central–42nd St; the plaza is directly outside on Park Avenue.
  • Free and open in a public plaza — no ticket needed.
  • Movable tables and chairs are on the plaza, but they go fast at lunchtime.
  • Grand Central's dining concourse is steps away for food to bring back.
  • Midday sun on the plaza is strong; the viaduct provides some shade.
  • Flat, paved and fully step-free.
